Term 2 Week 2 2024
From the Principal - Lisa Cavanagh
Dear Holy Name Families,
Welcome back to Term 2. I trust that you enjoyed some quality family time over the holidays and are excited for the term ahead.
Staffing
This term, we welcome several new members to the Holy Name School community.
Brook Marquart – Brook joins us as our year 5/6 classroom teacher. It has been wonderful to see the great teaching and learning occurring in the classroom already this term. Year 5/6 parents will have received a link to book into learning meetings with Brook for Monday the 29th of April from 3 PM to 6 PM.
John Fitch – John joins us as one of our two Wellbeing School Officers. He has extensive experience in working with young people from his time with Child Services and as a school Chaplain. John will be working with students each Friday.
Ben Maloney – Ben is another of our Wellbeing School Officers. A member of the Holy Name Parish community, Ben is experienced in working with young people though his role as the project officer with Evangelisation Brisbane, forming youth groups in the Archdiocese. Ben has also recently been appointed as the Mary MacKillop Catholic College Chaplain. Ben will be working with us on a Monday and Thursday.
Damian Dore – Damian is currently undertaking his Certificate III in Education Support through Queensland TAFE and will be completing his 100 hours of prac at Holy Name School. Damian is an accomplished musician, playing the organ at Mass at Holy Name Parish, and will be assisting Mrs Manthey and myself with the Sing Out Choir this year.
Please make all of our new staff members welcome.
AEDC
From May 2024, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC is a teacher-completed census (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.
The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years.
Children don’t miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information.
The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.
AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level. AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool.
Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the AEDC and how it is being used to help children and families visit: www.aedc.gov.au.
If you have any questions, you can contact the school for further information.

Uniforms
As the weather cools, it is a reminder that we are currently transitioning into our winter uniforms. At our March meeting, the School Board decided that we would have a transition period until the beginning of Week 4, where students could continue to wear shorts with their long sleeve shirts. As the weather warms in Term 3, we will allow a transition back to shorts.
Thank you to all those families who have ensured their children are wearing their winter uniforms with pride each day. We have had some reminders about wearing our ties correctly.
Beginning this term, I am going to award a ‘Uniform Wearer of the Week’. This will go to the student/s who are wearing their correct school uniform with pride each day. This week, the awards go to Hutchence in Year 2 and Sassi in Year 4/5. Well done to these two students.
Maintenance around the school
Many of the community have commented on the maintenance we have been conducting around the school. The grounds are looking beautiful and the deep clean of the MEAC and the paths around the school are certainly lifting our ‘street appeal’. Thank you to Chris Hansford for his assistance in securing the school after our recent break-in and vandalism. Chris will also be completing some of our maintenance work over the coming weeks.
Prep 2025 Interviews
I have begun conducting the 2025 Prep interviews and in response to the question – “Why have you chosen Holy Name School?”, I am often told of our great reputation as a small and supportive community. The day of the Cross-Country last week, I held several interviews with new families. The number of families in attendance, the joyful cheering and support of other runners by the students, and the free coffee provided by our wonderful P&F were a great advertisement of our fantastic school community.
If you have a child eligible to attend Prep in 2025 please ensure that you have completed you online application form. If you know of any families looking for an incredible school for their children – why not suggest Holy Name? The best advertisement for a school is word of mouth.
School Fees
Thank you to all the families who have ensured their school fee payments are up to date. The Term 2 accounts will be sent out shortly. If you have any concerns regarding your ability to meet your school fee obligations, please make an appointment to discuss with me.
All the best for the term ahead.
God Bless

Loving God,
We grieve the loss of life through acts of violence.
Please comfort all those who grieve,
or have been impacted by these events.
We thank you for the everyday heroes, police,
ambulance and emergency medicine personnel
who were first responders to these events.
We pray for the recovery of
those who have been injured, and those who continue
to be distressed by these traumatic circumstances.
Please turn our hearts to Jesus that we may
find our rest in him and hasten the day
when peace and justice reign.
We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace.
Amen

Welcome to Term Two. I hope you enjoyed a wonderful break with family and friends and were able to take some time for prayer and reflection to celebrate the mysteries of Jesus’ Passion, Death and Resurrection.
This term our Gospel Value lived in the Mercy Tradition: Power Of The Heart focus is Hospitality. Hospitality is the creation of a welcoming, inclusive and respectful environment, through both words and actions. Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Mercy Sisters, had such a creative approach to hospitality. Her first sense of the ministry to which she felt called was a ministry of hospitality. She had, throughout her young life, been consistently dependent on the hospitality of others and she looked to return that goodness. When the resources became available to her, she created a place where women and children were welcomed. She took people in – into her house, into her heart into her concerns. Catherine’s lessons of hospitality are best summed up in her maxim, ‘The proof of love is deed.’ This term, students will be explicitly taught this Mercy Value through the use of I can statements:
I can:
- invite others to collaborate and play with me
- care for others when I see they need help
- welcome others with what we have
Thank you to the families who were able to attend the ANZAC Day Prayer Celebration with us on Wednesday 24 April. Thank you to the Year Three classes and Miss Hose, Mrs McAllister and Ms Dixon for the moving commemoration service.

We are thrilled to dive into these topics with your children and make learning both educational and enjoyable.
A gentle reminder that library lessons are scheduled for Tuesdays, and we kindly request that homework be returned on Tuesdays for marking, with the aim to send it back home on Wednesdays.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child’s education. It was great to see the excitement on the students faces as they returned to school, ready for another term of learning and growth.

Year 2 Blue - Kirralee Bronkhurst
In 2B this term we will be looking at:
Maths: We are learning to recognise, describe and create additive patterns that increase or decrease by a constant amount, using numbers, shapes and objects, and identify missing elements in the pattern. We are learning to recognise, compare and classify shapes, referencing the number of sides and using spatial terms. We are learning to identify, describe and demonstrate quarter, half, three-quarter and full measures of turn in everyday situations. We are learning to order shapes and objects using informal units based on volume and capacity.
English: We are looking at procedural texts. In this unit, students listen to, read and view a range of texts that contain certain structural elements and language features that reflect an informative text. They will understand the text structure, purpose and language features of a procedure and will write and present their own. Students will continue to develop sentence structure and will edit their work. They will continue developing reading and comprehension strategies and sound and letter knowledge.
Religion: Students will learn that the Bible is a sacred text that is made up of both the Old Testament and New Testament. They will be able to use the table of contents to find familiar stories. They will learn that the Old Testament was written prior to the birth of Jesus and was traditionally orally shared before being written. Early versions of the Old Testament were written on scrolls and in Hebrew. Through these stories they will learn about the early Jewish people and their covenants with God.
The students will learn that the New Testament covers the time of Jesus and was made up of parables and gospels. They will learn through these stories that God was loving and forgiving in nature.
