Term 2 Week 6 2023

A picture is worth a thousand words...
Adhering to our updated newsletter format, with this issue scheduled as a publication compiled entirely of photos and student work, I have included the obligatory photo. The privilege of my position though allows for some embellishment and so indulge me if you will, whilst I share my words on the above photo. I promise not quite a thousand.
- Captured in time the face of a child who moments prior had discovered her consequence for pushing over her older brother. Apology issued and no ice-cream for dessert. A powerful lesson for a 4-year-old. As parents and educators it is important that children are taught what is expected of them and have opportunities to practise those expected behaviours. A key role of school staff is to set high expectations for behaviour and learning across the whole school community and for all students. Having clear expectations for behaviour allows schools to provide consistency in what they teach, acknowledge and correct in terms of student behaviour.
The Holy Name Primary School Student Behaviour Support Plan is designed to facilitate high standards of behaviour, promoting inclusive practises, so that the learning and teaching in our school can be effective and students can participate positively within our school community. Our school community has identified the following school expectations to teach and promote our high standards of behaviour:
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Safe
- Be Active Learners
Whilst a range of preventative and early intervention strategies support positive student behaviours, at times, students require additional support in meeting school behavioural expectations. The method staff use to achieve this is to:
- Define the school expectation
- Discuss how their behaviour differs from the school expectation
- Discuss possible consequences of the behaviour
- Identify and teach the replacement behaviour.
As part of our School Behaviour Support Plan, we believe parents have the right to be informed when their child has received this additional support to meet school behavioural expectations (see below for the complete list of Parents and Carers – Rights and Responsibilities from the Holy Name Primary School Behaviour Support Plan). This occurs through a Behaviour Communication Form. At all times, when applying consequences, the individual circumstances and actions of the student and the needs and rights of the community members are considered.
Like all children, the child in the photo above was learning how to manage emotions and conform to behavioural expectations, and with support and appropriate consequences she did just that…
Blessings
Kerri-Ann Manthey

Year 1
Year 2
We have been busy in Year 2 lately:
In English, we have been learning how to write an information report, we have written one about Echidnas. Miss Kimmorley gives us facts and then we put these in our own words. Once we have finished writing it, we are learning how to use Microsoft Word and type it up on the computer. Tia
In Maths we have been learning about lots of things. We have been looking at patterns on number lines. We have been skip counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s. I find skip counting in 10s the trickiest out of all of them. Each week we have been practising our addition and subtraction, going up into the hundreds! Evodie
In Religion we have been learning about Jesus. We have been working with partners and talking about what we know about Jesus from the different Bible stories. We are reading different Bible stories and learning how we can be like Jesus today. Olivia
Year 3
Busy times in Year 3 with students working hard and get into a rhythm with the routines we have in place. The students have been settled and enjoy the structure each day.
We continue to work on procedures in our English lessons, the students have a good understanding of why we use them and where they apply them. Math has seen a heavy focus on addition and subtraction with the introduction of multiplication number facts - 2x and 10x.
This week, we continue with our HASS focus and where Australia's neighbouring countries are. In Science, we look at heat energy and in Health we continue to investigate the importance of moving our bodies regularly.
Finally, we continue to look at Jesus and who he is to us individually and the role he plays in our life.
Please touch base if you would like to discuss your child as we head towards the end of semester.
Have a great week.
David

Year 5
Year 6
Maths:
In Maths this fortnight, we have been learning all about data. We have collected data in many different forms such as pie charts, dot plots and line graphs. In one lesson, we collected data on our heart rate and watched how it changed over a 10-minute period when exercising vigorously and compared it to our resting heart rate. It was interesting to see the different.
- Archie & Garang
English:
In English this fortnight, we have been learning how to write a biography. We chose an adult we admire to write our assessment on such as Barak Obama, Walt Disney, and Cristiano Ronaldo, and many more. We have really enjoyed this text type in English, and we have learned a lot through our research.
- Plamedi, Libby & Maddie
HASS:
In HASS, we have been learning about…
- Systems of Government in Australia – We have been learning about the different systems of government and what they are in charge of.
- Bills – The process of how a bill becomes a law.
- Laws – What a law is and how the process taken to change them.
- Haylee & Skye
Camp:
We can’t believe it’s Week 6 already! The term is flying by. If you haven’t heard, the Year 5 and Year 6 students will be going to camp to Emu Gully on the 5th to 7th of June. Make sure you pack plenty of old clothes to get muddy!
We are so excited!
- Ruby, Edie & Magdalene
TCS Arts Fest:
For the past week, we have been working on a cube for the TCS Arts Fest. We have used symbols or words to represent our school and we also drew a picture of ourselves. Stay tuned for the end result.

Sport
In PE lessons, our time with Renea Reich, Level 3 High Performance Athletics Coach, has come to an end sadly! She has been amazing with the children, teaching them the correct techniques and offering tips and tricks in order to improve our results with Shot Put, Discus, High Jump, Long Jump and Sprints. We thank her for her time and efforts, and look forward to seeing some great results at our Athletics Carnival in Week 9.
I wanted to acknowledge some athletes from Holy Name that have been competing in various sporting events outside of school, like Mikey and CC Larkin, who recently completed a cross country event, with Mikey in Year 1, taking out second place in his age group. It’s so fantastic to see children representing the school so well and giving their best efforts. I would also like to mention a former student, Nazarlo Larkin, who has just been selected in the QLD team for U12 Touch Football!
In the upcoming weeks, we will be joined by the Hockey Development Officer and the Touch Football Development Officer. These are fantastic opportunities for the children of Holy Name to learn from the best in sports that they may not always be exposed to!
Our Athletics Carnival is fast approaching – Wednesday the 14th of June and Thursday the 15th of June! I look forward to seeing as many parents their supporting their children as possible, it will be a great couple of days!
Any sport related questions please don’t hesitate to email me on jenna.taylor@twb.catholic.edu.au
